Since its first publication in 1938, Larousse Gastronomique has been an unparalleled resource. In one volume, it presents the history of foods, eating, and restaurants; cooking terms; techniques from elementary to advanced; a review of basic ingredients with advice on recognizing, buying, storing, and using them; biographies of important culinary figures; and recommendations for cooking nearly everything.

The new edition, the first since 1988, expands the book’s scope from classic continental cuisine to include the contemporary global table, appealing to a whole new audience of internationally conscious cooks. Larousse Gastronomique is still the last word on béchamel and béarnaise, Brillat-Savarin and Bordeaux, but now it is also the go-to source on biryani and bok choy, bruschetta and Bhutan rice.

Larousse Gastronomique is rich with classic and classic-to-be recipes, new ingredients, new terms and techniques, as well as explanations of current food legislation, labeling, and technology. User-friendly design elements create a whole new Larousse for a new generation of food lovers.

 "Thorough." 2009-06-23
By Aaron C. Ettlin (Portland)
A culinary encyclopedia for all things European, ancient and modern. Current version includes more world cuisine. Also, at $55 hardcover, this is a steal. Really more of a reference than a cookbook, although it does have some hundreds of recipes. English translation is slightly awkward at times, mostly in describing recipe steps, although still completely followable. Heavy book.

"Gastromonde to aspiring home cook" 2009-05-21
By L. Sauer (Morrison, CO)
A fantastic collection of information, useful for not only the master chef who needs a reference book, but for those of us seeking to push our home-bound skills to the next level. Larousse is the true encyclopedia of culinary knowledge. It is essential in any well-stocked kitchen, not because it will be pulled and perused daily, but because it can be that resource that saves a spoiled meal in the last minutes with its quick and accessible insights.

 "Library Staple" 2009-02-08
By Willie
Bought this as a gift. What a monster. It has succinct detailed info about all aspects of French and other countries' cuisine. Goes way beyond recipes with info about food handling, preparation, storage, substitutions for ingredients. Lots of facts about how to use ingredients best and their roles in cooking. Lots of interesting history. There were 3 pages on butter! Great pictures in beautifully edited book. Of course, many excellent recipes. It has become one of the top references in our cooking library. We highly recommend this gem.

 "Not Too Useful" 2009-01-29
By Ben (Western USA)
It seems like this is mostly a dictionary of dish titles with descriptions of what they consist of. It is neither an encyclopedic reference to ingredients, techniques, or styles nor a catalog of recipes. Much of the cuisine is impractical for the home, and most of the rest is too old fashioned for professionals that work in a competitive and trendy environment. I use Joy of Cooking extensively at home and was looking for more base knowledge like that found in the introduction to sections and the know your ingredients parts. Larousse is very encompassing but appears also to be very cursory. It makes a great source for obscure trivia.

 "Awesome" 2009-09-11
By Roger Breton Jr. (Leominster, MA)
Great water filtration pitcher. I was going to get the Brita, but after reading several poor reviews in design and about leaking orings i decided to get this. It Filters water quite fast. I used to buy the 2.5 gallon water with a tap from the grocery store and after getting this have saved so much money just after a few months and i cant even tell the difference. It goes a little faster because its only 1.1 gallons, but if you just fill it up every night before you go to bed, sometimes twice a day just to keep the water ice cold its really worth it. I have not had any leaks, i have not had any mold or mildew. Stays crisp for the 2 months the filter is good. When i change the filter i wash it. Couldnt have asked for a better product both to save money and save space in the refrigerator as its pretty well designed. You should buy this!!

 "Supposedly removes pharmaceuticals" 2009-09-09
By LawyerMom (USA)
I am an avid believer in filtered water especially after reading reports about pharmaceuticals in the public drinking water. In Philadelphia, there were 56 types of drugs found in the water there. Hormone drugs commonly used for transgendered individuals were found in the water in San Francisco.

While the amounts found were tiny, microscopic even, I am increasingly alarmed about the buildup of these chemicals, plus the usual dangers of lead, mercury, and chlorine in our water and our bodies. This box for this filter claims that it can reduce lead, mercury, and chlorine as well as pharmaceuticals (though the pharmaceuticals claim is not verified through any official testing agency).

When we moved into a new home this filter was able to meet our ample needs until we could get an under the sink filter installed. It was easy to refill, took up very little room in the refrigerator, looked nice, and was easy to use. I would fill it up and use it to fill up multiple other gallon-sized water bottles to put in my fridge. It was simple to sit it on my ledge and flip up the dispenser and the water flowed quickly and without leaking. Glad I made the purchase!

"I will always have one of these in my fridge!!!" 2009-09-07
By Amy Jones (Austin, TX USA)
It sounds weird but I adore this water filter! It is always so nice to have cold water in the fridge. We pull it out for dinnertime and put it on a nearby counter so we can refill with ease. Our children can use it easily to get water for themselves and it's a great item to have around when we have guests over. I think we have had ours for about 5 years now. It now has a couple of cracks but that is only because we use it so much. When this one eventually is kaputt we will definitely invest in another! I highly recommend this item.

My only advice on use is to not drink the first batch of water that runs through a new filter. There probably isn't anything wrong with that water...it just tastes funny to me personally.

 "Nice tea pot" 2008-05-12
By Wilda Gardens (Hadley, MA)
This is a beautifully designed tea pot. Not only can you steep tea in this pot, you can heat your water (or milk, etc.) in it. The design is fantastic and if you care for it properly, like all other cast iron (i.e. wash and dry it as soon as you are done with it) it should last a life time. With all cast iron it really is important to not leave water in it or it will rust.

This is our first piece of Staub. I am generally a big fan of All-Clad and Le Creuset, but when I saw this pot a few years ago, I fell in love with it. We've get the blue one and it really compliments our other kitchen equipment and dishes (Polish pottery with lots of blue).

"Ne pas acheter de tout, de Staub." 2008-01-31
By Theodore Kleinman (Redmond, OR USA)
Here is my experience with Staub "Customer Service" and getting them to honor their warranty. Our teapot started rusting at the edge of the lid within two months of purchase.

I contacted Staub over a month ago and still have not received my replacement teapot. I will not bore you with the numerous interactions between Staub and me but here are some of the excuses I have heard.

1. We are taking year-end inventory and you will need to wait.

2. We are short-handed and got behind because of the Y/E inventory.

3. Staub fired the person that was supposed to handle returns. At least I have an explanation as to why he never returned my phone calls.

4. Today, I received an "admonishment" from Staub that has not even seen the defective teapot.

We only accept returns on teapots once. With your teapot comes a small pamphlet with care and use instructions. If these had been followed, your teapot would not have rusted. Please make sure you follow these instructions, and also remember that this is not a 'TEA KETTLE', but a TEAPOT.

Have you heard enough?

 "Nice Teapot" 2007-12-05
By Careful Buyer (Pittsburgh, PA)
Very nice, sturdy teapot. The cast iron construction maintains heat well, keeping your tea warm for an extended period. Also, it can be heated over a flame, unlike most Japanese style cast iron tetsubin pots, which can not be placed over a flame. I also like the simple, vintage design. The only reason I gave a four was that the teapot I received from Amazon seemed to be a second choice, with sloppy painting and a non-matte finish. However, these defects do not effect its functionality in any way.

"More than a teapot but NOT a tea kettle " 2007-10-15
By TCL (Guilford, CT USA)
This is a Teapot not a Tea kettle. You can both boil your water and brew your tea in this pot because it is cast iron, but the boiling water part is not the point of this teapot. Therefore it does not have a whistle because you are not meant to stick this on the stove and walk away.

Staub teapots follow the Asian Villagers (for example Japanese Tetsubin teapots) way of making tea where you watch the water boil, dump the leaves in and serve from a sturdy cast iron pot that will keep the tea warm for an hour. The cast iron is traditionally meant for a woodstove, stone hearth or firepit. Imagine being by the fire in a cottage in the woods on a crisp fall day, then this would be your pot.

This is an excellent interpretation of the Asian village teapot. It is larger and therefore has many more applications such as making Chai Tea (where you boil the spices and tea), mull wine, apple cider or even make a rich vanilla sauce or warm berry compote for your desert. The round shape is perfect for your whisk and the pouring spout is convenient. It is pretty enough to be brought to the table and the cast iron keeps the sauces warm for round two.

The interior is a dark grey shiny porcelain glaze (not matte as decribed). The cast iron shows through the Sunflower-colored glaze around the spout and makes the pot look a little dirty or unfinished. I would recomend getting this in a darker brighter color to avoid this.

It is also cast in a slightly thinner cast iron than their pots.

 "Best on the Market" 2007-08-11
By Jessica (Chicago, IL United States)
It's true this tea pot has no whistle and that it is heavy (it's made of cast iron after all!) It is also true that because it is made of cast iron you must be careful to dry it after using or washing it.

With that said this is the best tea pot I have ever owned or used. This is because the spout is really drip free. Often when I use a teapot I end up spilling hot water at the start or end of the pour. That has never happened with this pot, and I have been using it for two years now.

It is also quite lovely.

Highly recommended for any tea fanatic.

 "Excellent crepe pan" 2009-05-23
By R. Roy
This crepe pan is fantastic. With some hot oil seasoning it took about 4 or 5 uses to get a very nice non-stick surface. It's built like a tank, I can see why staub offers a lifetime guarantee on their products. It also came with a wooden spreader and a wooden spatula which work well. I use it on a ceramic surface stove with no issues. I can't imaging making thin crepes without it now.

 "PERFECT crepe pan" 2008-07-20
By June B. Patch (Tucson, AZ USA)
This high quality crepe pan comes pre-seasoned, so it's ready to use from the get go. It's heavy like Le Crueset pieces, and built to last many life times. When I invest in quality cookware like this, I consider the pieces heirloom quality pieces. This pan makes crepes perfectly every single time. Just melt some butter on the pan, pour on your batter, spread the batter with the nifty wooden spreader that comes with the pan and presto! You have crepes. Also, I feel confident cooking with this fine cast-iron pan knowing that it isn't toxic to cook on like Teflon or most stainless steel pieces. Finally, this pan comes with a wooden handle so it doesn't get hot to the touch. That's a great feature. No need for an oven mitt! Yes, this pan is worth the money, I highly recommend it and would definitely buy it again.

"Great pan @ reasonable price" 2008-03-24
By T. Martin (Maryland)
This pan is fantastic, I love enameled cast iron. It's easy to clean, holds a lot of heat & with a little butter, is practically non-stick.

I've used it plenty of times for crepe's. Before I got it, I used my frying pan (worked OK, but the lip got in the way), now thinks are easier & the cast iron makes the temperature control more reliable (I have an electric stove) and the crepes more consistent. If I had a gas stove and all the $$$ in the world, I might try one of those fancy copper crepe pans, but I doubt they'd be much better than what I get now.
